Job Description
Job ID:
The University of South Carolina’s (USC) Arnold
School of Public Health (SPH) is seeking applicants for a 9-month
tenure-track faculty position in Epidemiology in the Department of
Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The position is open rank, with
preference for candidates who would be qualified for appointment
at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor.
The successful candidate is expected to have a
strong record of epidemiologic research and teaching experience.
The successful applicant will be expected to teach core courses in
the department’s curricula as well as courses in the candidate’s
substantive research area, to maintain an active program of
epidemiologic research, to supervise student thesis and
dissertation research, and to contribute to the department’s and
school’s programs through professional service and mentoring of
junior faculty.
The Arnold SPH has national prominence in
epidemiology and biostatistics, with research funding from NIH,
CDC, other federal and state agencies, private foundations, and
industry. Our collaborative research involves numerous other
entities on and off campus, and we expect significant growth in
the faculty over the next several years. There are ample
opportunities to collaborate with faculty members in the
Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and across the school
who are working in the areas of cancer, diabetes, physical
activity and obesity. Other areas of research strengths in the
department include maternal and child health, social epidemiology,
community-based participatory research methods, environmental and
occupational epidemiology and health disparities research.
The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics
offers a full range of graduate degrees in epidemiology and
biostatistics. A unique aspect of our program is that incoming
master’s-level epidemiology and biostatistics students are
required to take a substantial number of core methods courses
jointly in the first semester of the program. Our epidemiology
program is home to 50 doctoral students and 30 masters students.
In addition to the core public health departments
(Epidemiology and Biostatistics; Environmental Health Sciences;
Health Promotion, Education, and Behavior; and Health Services
Policy and Management), the Arnold SPH includes a nationally
prominent Department of Exercise Science and a Department of
Communication Sciences and Disorders. There are several research
centers at USC focused on prevention, health services and policy,
rural health, nutrition and health disparities, and public health
preparedness. Also, USC’s partnerships with the Greenville
Hospital System as well as other health sciences units (Medicine,
Nursing, Pharmacy, and Social Work) facilitate opportunities to
conduct clinical translational research and comparative
effectiveness research. Local resources include the SC Department
of Health and Environmental Control; a gold star rated Central
Cancer Registry, and the Office of Research and Statistics, a
statewide, integrated data warehouse that contains Medicaid,
hospitalization, and other health data available for research.
Columbia enjoys more than 300 days of sunshine
annually and has ready access to both beaches and mountains. It
hosts historical and cultural attractions, festivals, performing
arts and sporting events, and has parks and outdoor recreation
including the Congaree National Park and 50,000 acre Lake Murray.
Additional information about the school and
department can be found at
www.sph.sc.edu . Review of applications will begin in January
2013 and continue until the position is filled. Applicants should
send a cover letter
stating career goals and the relevance of the candidate’s training
and experience to the
position, a current CV, and names and contact
information for three references via email to:
