Job Description

Job ID:
   120057

The National Academy of Sciences seeks scientists to fill two biostatistics positions at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) in Hiroshima, Japan. The primary responsibilities of these positions are statistical consulting on the design of radiation research protocols and analysis of research data in consultation with RERF epidemiologists, clinical researchers, and laboratory scientists, with additional independent research on related statistical methodologies and applications. Candidates must be U.S. citizens; hold an earned Ph.D. degree (or equivalent degree/experience) in biostatistics, bioinformatics, or statistics; and have a demonstrated record of productivity in a relevant research field commensurate with the level of appointment. Appointments can be made at any career level (postdoc to senior scientist) for a minimum of one year but desirably for a two-year renewable appointment. For more information about this position, please contact Dr. Kevin Crowley at NAS (kcrowley@nas.edu) or Dr. Harry Cullings at RERF (cullings@rerf.or.jp).

The Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) is a bi-national foundation supported by the governments of Japan and the United States and is a global leader in the study of long-term effects of radiation exposure on human health and its interactions with genes, lifestyle, and environment. Established as the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) in 1947, RERF studies the health of Japanese atomic bomb survivors in three large cohort studies: Life Span Study, Adult Health Study, and a study of survivor offspring (F1 Study). The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) established the ABCC at the request of the U.S. Government and has a long-standing cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy to recruit and hire U.S. scientists to work at RERF.

The successful candidates will be expected to spend at least 75% time on statistical consulting duties, primarily to assist in the design of radiation research protocols, the analysis and interpretation of data and development of publications in consultation with epidemiologists, clinical researchers, and laboratory scientists; and the remaining time on independent research on statistical methodology development on study design, data analysis, and mathematical modeling pertinent to RERF’s research on radiation health effects. Manuscript preparation, editing, and oral presentations are important responsibilities of this position.
