How Many
Different Kinds of Epidemiologists Are There, Anyway?
One of our readers who submitted
suggestions for subspecialties in epidemiology wondered how many
different kinds of epidemiologists there are. Obviously, there are at
least as many kinds as there are subspecialties (e.g., chronic disease
epidemiologist, cancer epidemiologist, etc.).
Other Kinds
However, epidemiologists are
often referred to in a surprising number of other ways. For example,
epidemiologists are often referred to in relation to their educational
background (as in nurse epidemiologist), in relation to their
experience (as in senior epidemiologist), in relation to their
employer (as in state epidemiologist), in relation to their position
in the organization (as in chief epidemiologist) in relation to their
style of work (as in armchair epidemiologist!), in relation to their
method of data collection (as in shoe-leather epidemiologist), or in
relation to their standing in the profession (card-carrying
epidemiologist).
