A Profile of the UNM College of Pharmacy
Located in the historically rich and culturally diverse Southwest, the College of Pharmacy is part of the Health Sciences campus and works collaboratively with the School of Medicine, College of Population Health, College of Nursing, UNM Hospitals, and UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center in the state’s largest health complex. The College holds the distinction of having the most ethnically diverse student body in the nation. Unique programs within the College include the New Mexico Poison and Drug Information Center, UNM/NMSU Cooperative Pharmacy program, and the oldest training program in nuclear pharmacy in the country. Additionally, the College’s Substance Use Research and Education (SURE) Center(https://hsc.unm.edu/pharmacy/research/areas/sure-center.html) incorporates innovative collaborative research and education programs, in partnership with other centers and institutes at the University of New Mexico, by pursuing multi-disciplinary opportunities in the field of licit (i.e. alcohol and nicotine), illicit, and nonmedical prescription drug use, misuse, and substance use disorders (SUD). The SURE Center is leading several NIAAA-, NIDA-, and NICHD-funded studies and is an active partner with the NIDA Southwest Clinical Trial Node on ongoing multi-center clinical trials.

The UNM College of Pharmacy is dedicated to addressing the needs of the under served and vulnerable communities of New Mexico. The rural populations of New Mexico are disadvantaged by limited access to health care, in addition to high prevalence of substance use disorders, mental health disparities, and unique occupational and environmental health challenges. Specific opportunities exist to undertake impactful research on health disparities among the many Hispanic/Latinx and Native American communities. The College of Pharmacy has extensive and important partnerships with vulnerable communities through the College’s HEALthy Brain and Child Development(HBCD) Program (https://hbcdstudy.org/) and Center for Native Environmental HealthEquity Research https://hsc.unm.edu/pharmacy/research/areas/native-eh-equity/).Candidates with specific interests in addressing issues related to health disparities and working with vulnerable populations are encouraged to apply.

UNM offers exciting opportunities for inter-professional practice, research, and education. The College has 53 faculty and 474 preceptors throughout the state. Strong partnerships with the New Mexico Pharmacists Association, New Mexico Society of Health-System Pharmacists, and the New Mexico Board of Pharmacy have created disease state management programs and innovative practice opportunities including pharmacist clinicians with prescriptive authority. The College ranks 8th in NIH grants,12th in total Federal Grants, and 15th overall in research funding among the colleges of pharmacies in the United States. College faculty collaborate extensively across the university (UNM College of Nursing, School of Medicine [i.e., Departments of Family and Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neuroscience, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry], College of Population Health, Department of Economics, and other Centers and Institutes in New Mexico [i.e., Center for Developmental Disabilities, Prevention Research Center, Center on Alcoholism Substance Abuse and Addictions(CASAA), Clinical and Translational Sciences Center (CTSC)]) as well as Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratory VA Cooperative Studies Program, Lovelace Biomedical Institute, and the MIND Research Network.
