The Future of Epidemiology  (1 of 3)

Special Exclusive Report

This issue of Epi Monitor is devoted almost exclusively to reporting on the First International Panum Seminar organized in Copenhagen in late January to discuss “The Future of Epidemiology.” We judged this topic of sufficient interest and importance to accord it special treatment and we hope that you will find our reporting useful and interesting.

“The Future of Epidemiology” as a topic first burst onto the epidemiology world stage in 1995 when Brazilian epidemiologists asked Mervyn Susser to address the topic at their Joint Epidemiology Congress in Salvador, Bahia Brazil (see the Epi Monitor, June 1995). According to Susser, “since the Brazilians gave me the question, it has been feeding a lot of people.” Whether it is the approaching millenium, the ire raised by Gary Taubes in his Science article, or some vaguely felt malaise becoming more prevalent in the field, there is no denying that this topic has been “the buzz” ever since. And it shows no signs of letting up.
