Job Description

Job ID:

Wayne State University (WSU) is seeking an epidemiologist to play a strong role in expanding our current research and teaching programs in public health and medicine.  This is a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant/associate/full professor level in the Department of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences (DFMPHS), which is located on the medical campus of WSU in downtown Detroit.

Applicants must have a PhD, ScD, or equivalent degree in Epidemiology or a closely related field.  Successful candidates will have a history of and/or strong potential to develop an externally funded research program.  Applicants with a strong background in collaborative research and a track record of external funding will be preferred.  The new faculty member will be expected to contribute to teaching in graduate programs in public health and to mentor graduate students.

Health disparities and stress are two areas of emphasis in ongoing research in the department.  Currently, our faculty have funding in a wide range of areas including perinatal health, cancer, obesity, occupational health, violence, and the relationship between primary care and public health. The Department of Family Medicine & Public Health Sciences (DFMPHS) (www.med.wayne.edu/fam/) has an active research program and ranks 4th among U.S. departments of family medicine in NIH funding.

The DFMPHS has a CEPH-accredited MPH Program and the successful applicant will be central to developing a new epidemiology track within the MPH Program and eventually a PhD program in epidemiology.  The DFMPHS has strong collaborative relationships with many other programs at WSU including the Karmanos Cancer Institute, the Institute of Gerontology, the Mott Center for Human Growth and Development, the Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, and the Center for Molecular Medicine and Genetics, The School of Medicine has a multitude of residency and fellowship programs and has the largest enrollment of any single campus medical school in the US.

Applications will be considered until the position is filled.  However, application materials should be received by February 1st, 2013 for full consideration, preferably by email to Ms. Mercedes Hendrickson (mhendric@med.wayne.edu). All candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, teaching statement, research statement, and the names (with contact information) of three references.
