The Division of Epidemiology in the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health (JPHCOPH) invites nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Epidemiology. Georgia Southern University (www.georgiasouthern.edu), a member institution of the University System of Georgia and a Carnegie Doctoral/Research University, is one of Georgia’s premier universities. A residential university serving more than 20,000 students, Georgia Southern is recognized for providing all of the benefits of a major university with the feeling of a much smaller college. Founded in 1906, the University offers more than 100 campus-based and online degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels through eight colleges. In 2012, Georgia Southern was named one of the top 10 most popular universities in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The more than 700 acre park-like campus is located in Statesboro, a classic Main Street community near historic Savannah and Hilton Head Island.

The JPHCOPH at Georgia Southern University is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. Our mission is to improve the health of the public, support the development of a talented public health workforce, serve rural and underserved populations and support the elimination of health disparities. We will continue to invest the necessary resources to build this outstanding College of Public Health that is increasingly recognized for teaching, research, and service. Justification for development of a College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University was directly related to the potential impact this institution could have in Georgia and the nation. The establishment of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health was made possible by a generous gift in 2004 from Dr. Karl E. Peace, in memory and honor of his wife, Dr. Jiann-Ping Hsu.

The JPHCOPH offers Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees with five emphasis areas: Biostatistics, Community Health, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, and Health Policy & Management and the Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA). In addition, we offer three Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) degrees in Community Health Education and Behavior, Biostatistics, and Public Health Leadership.

Position Description. Reporting to the Director of the Division of Epidemiology, the Assistant Professor position requires teaching, advisement, service, and research/scholarship responsibilities. The position requires a terminal degree. The successful applicant will teach graduate-level courses to students in the College, be actively involved in extramurally funded research, provide service/outreach to the public health community, serve on committees, and participate in official activities at the college and university levels. The position is a 9-month tenure-tract appointment. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Required Qualifications:

• Earned doctorate (PhD, DrPH, ScD, MD or other relevant doctoral degree by August 1, 2013) in Epidemiology or other field appropriate for the expertise offered

• Commitment to teaching, academic program development, research, and service that is consistent with the College’s vision and mission

• Proven record of or demonstrated potential for securing extramural research funding

• Commitment to service within the University, the profession, and community

• Ability to contribute to a positive work environment in the College and University

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated commitment to research and service for elimination of health disparities, particularly with rural and underserved populations

• Graduate public health training from or teaching/work experience in a CEPH accredited school or program

Screening of applications begins October 31st, 2012 and continues until the position is filled. The preferred position starting date is August 1st, 2013. A complete application consists of a letter addressing the qualifications cited above; curriculum vitae; and the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses of at least three professional references. Other documentation may be requested. Only complete applications and applications submitted electronically will be considered. Finalists will be required to submit to a background investigation. Applications and nominations with the subject entitled "Application for Epidemiology #65413 position" should be e-mailed to:
