The Institute of Environmental Medicine, a department at Karolinska Institutet, is an interdisciplinary research organization within the field of Environmental Medicine. The purpose is to carry out research and education, and perform investigations and analyses, pertaining to physical and chemical aspects of
environmental medicine and health protection.

Division
The Unit of Cardiovascular Epidemiology at IMM runs several large-scale epidemiological and clinical studies. The research is directed at investigating mechanisms behind cardiovascular diseases and atherosclerosis with a particular interest in novel inflammatory biomarkers and genetics. The unit of Cardiovascular Epidemiology offers a postdoc position for two years with a possibility to a prolongation for another two years.

Duties
The position focuses on cardiovascular epidemiological research on both healthy subjects and those with cardiovascular disease. The studies utilize various epidemiological materials like 60 year old men and women, case-control materials on post-myocardial infarctions and controls, cohorts containing noninvasive
assessments of atherosclerosis and also the Swedish Twin Registry. Large biobank materials are utilized for determinations of biomarkers as well as for genotypings. There are many collaborations with leading international centres. The post doc will be included in the team and is expected to participate in investigations and analyses of available data, write papers, and supervise doctoral students. The research environment in the group is characterized by openness and creativity and there are also great possibilities for interactions with other researchers at Karolinska Institutet.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than five years before the last date of employment as postdoc. The applicants should have a PhD degree in epidemiology awarded within the past five years, and must be fluent in English. Applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the last date for applications should be given priority. Special weight will be given academic skills with a strong publication record, particularly previous experience of epidemiological analyses of cardiovascular studies (case-control or cohorts). Postgraduates who have yet to graduate may apply if their public defense is scheduled to take place within three months after the application deadline, in which case verification from the Dissertation Committee or equivalent body must be submitted with the application.
